The Great Deodorant Challenge of 2009

I have a problem. My deodorant no longer cuts it for me. Not meaning that it still leaves me stinking to high heaven. It leaves me very fresh and pretty smelling, but scratching and itching. In fact, from the minute I get home from work until the moment I take a shower, I scratch my pits like a goddamn gorilla. Mikey looks at me like I have a nervous twitch. So, it’s time for a change. I am calling this the Great Deodorant Challenge of 2009, because my first attempt at trying something better for my poor irritated pits, turned out to be a disaster. So, I can tell this is going to take a bit of effort on my part…and why not include all two or three of you who still read, but rarely comment?

The first attempt at switching deodorants, began at Trader Joe’s. Its apparent that I have some allergies and intolerances to chemicals. Trader Joe’s, being so organic and all, sells organic deodorant…no chemicals. I’ve heard that aluminum is bad to have in deodorant and parabens are bad to have in most cosmetic and hygiene related items. Trader Joe’s sells paraben and aluminum free deodorant…they use cotton fibers to absorb the perspiration. I gave it a whirl and tried it out for a week.

Trader Joe\'s Unscented Organic Deodorant

The week resulted in itch-free pits (thats five points for TJ’s), but it resulted in stink ass pits all week long (thats minus ten points for TJ’s). I don’t think other people could smell me if I didn’t lift my arms, but the thought that they smelled that bad when I did…drove me to keep on trying and sampling.

So, yesterday I bought some Tom’s of Maine 12-hour long lasting deodorant in apricot. This is aluminum free, it didn’t say anything about parabens, but from what I could tell of the ingredients list, it looks like it is paraben free as well. I’ll give it a week and give you all a run down.

I love, love, love The TJ’s stuff.

Have you tried the crystal stuff? Kinda expensive but works well too.
